Department of economics and organization in forestry

Head of the department:
prof. dr Dragan Čomić
Associate professor

Within the Department of Economics and Organization of Forestry, subjects are studied that enable students to understand and practically apply economic disciplines in developing the economic, environmental and social aspects of the forestry sector. The procedural management of companies in the field of forestry is studied, as well as analyses measuring the impacts of external factors on the growth and development of such firms. These subjects strive to provide necessary organizational, managerial, business-related and other forms of knowledge to students, enabling future engineers to successfully manage the operation of organizations and institutions through promoting forestry and nature protection. The knowledge acquired through these courses provides a concrete understanding of the political system, as well as the most important political factors, institutions, establishments and organizations in the forestry sector. Possibilities for professional, effective and efficient ways of dealing with domestic and foreign trade in wood, as well as monitoring the situation and trends in the wood market, are highlighted in these subjects. Students are trained either independently or in a team in order to assess the market opportunities of the company being examined, as well as the realistic basis for defining the key elements of products, prices, promotion and distribution in the field of forestry. They are also trained to independently create solutions that will efficiently combine biological, technological and economic investments in order to provide the highest return on investment.

Through the teaching process, systematic knowledge from current literature and practical examples is transferred to students. The exercises used in classes are based on as many case studies and practical examples as possible. All forms of teaching involve two-way communication, where students are encouraged to freely express their opinions on the cases being presented, creating a positive working atmosphere in which all students are able to express their full potential and achieve higher success.

The paper uses current literature, and in addition to the classic issues in the field of economics and organization in forestry, we try to address topics that are innovative for forestry on a global level, such as CO2 loans, biomass use, socially responsible business, and more. The aim is for students to learn how to use acquired knowledge for practical purposes, and be able to take part in activities that do not solely utilize traditional products in forestry. In addition to theoretical lectures and exercises, field classes are also held for students to acquire the necessary knowledge for practical examples.

Teachers and associates from the Faculty of Forestry and Economics of the University of Banja Luka, as well as from the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade are actively involved within the Department. The development of the Department implies an orientation towards the continuous improvement of human resources, which is achieved by constant scientific research, but also through practical work with economic entities in the country and abroad. Active participation in the development of domestic and international conferences, working groups, COST actions and the like are emphasized within the Department.
