Faculty of Forestry of the University of Banja Luka Installed the First Dendrometers in Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Faculty of Forestry of the University of Banja Luka has successfully installed the first automatic dendrometers in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking a significant step forward in modern research on tree growth and forest vitality.
These activities were carried out within the international project “Conservation Strategies for Narrow-Leaved Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia) in the Danube Basin”, funded by the European Union through the INTERREG Danube Programme. The dendrometers were installed in the areas of FMU “Gradiška”, FU “Prnjavor”, and the Public Institution Memorial Area “Donja Gradina”.
The installation was conducted in cooperation with partners from Mendel University in Brno, Prof. Dr Jan Světlík and Lucia Petrovičová. From the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Banja Luka, the following staff members took part in the activities: Prof. Dr Branislav Cvjetković, Prof. Dr Vojislav Dukić, Prof. Dr Danijela Petrović, and Senior Teaching Assistant Srđan Bilić.
These state-of-the-art measuring devices continuously monitor water flow through trees (so-called sap flow) and record micrometre-scale changes in stem diameter, 24 hours a day. The collected data provide highly valuable insights into tree growth dynamics, tree vitality, and their ability to adapt to changing and extreme environmental conditions, such as drought, disease occurrence, insect outbreaks, and other environmental stress factors.
By installing dendrometers, the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Banja Luka has further strengthened its role as a leading scientific and research institution and has become part of an international network of institutions from the Danube Basin countries engaged in research on the impact of ecological factors on tree growth and forest vitality, thus contributing to forest conservation and the development of sustainable forestry.
